如果這是一封為秘書介紹新工作的推薦信，那還可以接受；不過對于申請研究生院來講，就似乎不太夠力度了。首先，這封推薦信犯的一個大忌就是不夠明確。從信中我們只看到推薦人很努力地用了一大堆形容詞，試著告訴入學(xué)評審委員，這個申請人“很聰明”、“很熱心”、“很有潛力”、“很有分析能力”云云，相關(guān)的例證卻付之厥如；接著，這封信又未能指出這個申請者這些特質(zhì)與將來的研究領(lǐng)域有何相關(guān)，只說在這個申請人的幫助下，他可以專心于研究工作，言下之意似乎就是告訴對方這個申請者是個很好的秘書，而非一個有前景的研究生。
其實，只要多用一點心思，換個觀察角度，單純、瑣碎的助理工作一樣可以表現(xiàn)出這名申請者在研究生院相關(guān)方面的能力。比方說，推薦人不妨強調(diào)他之所以雇用這個人為研究助理，是因為這個助理以前曾做過與他目前的研究領(lǐng)域相關(guān)的報告，表現(xiàn)出申請者在這個研究領(lǐng)域已經(jīng)具備的基礎(chǔ)知識和研究潛力。又以資料搜集工作為例，可以強調(diào)這個申請者如何善用某些方法，對資料進(jìn)行系統(tǒng)的分析整理等。
